Government Grants – Insulation grants, Solar Panel grants, and Heating grants UK

Sources of Funding and Government Grants

There is a range of government grants available to help you improve the energy efficiency of your home and save money on your energy bill. These include insulation grants and grants for solar panels. Contact us today to find local installers to carry out grant-funded work on your behalf!

Sources of Government grants and funding include:

Warm Front Scheme – Insulation grants and central heating grants for the UK. A Government Warm Front grant of up to £6000 has been available for improvements to heating and insulation, for householders on income-related benefits (or with occupants under 16, over 60, or with a disability – click here for more information on Warm Front grant eligibility criteria). Please note that this Government grant scheme is currently oversubscribed. However, new applications open for these insulation grants and UK heating grants on 1st April 2011. Demand is high and there is only a set amount of funding available so it is advisable to apply early.

Installers and Suppliers – Some installers can offer Government insulation grants of 50-100% of the cost for loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. The Government grants go direct to installers and means that some suppliers can provide free or heavily discounted services.  Currently loft and cavity wall insulation grants are available from installers.

Local Authorities and Council Grants – Depending on where you live you may be able to receive Government grants from your local council.

Energy Companies – Under current legislation energy suppliers must work to decrease carbon emissions. Energy companies will often promote or sell discount loft insulation - see our weekly bulletin on the cheapest place to buy loft insulation.

Renewable Incentive Scheme (and selling electricity back to the grid) – Even better than Government grants, homeowners who install energy-generating technology such as solar panels can claim money for the energy they generate. This Government grant incentive scheme is designed so that if you take out a loan to buy the panels then the payments you receive are higher than your loan payments (on a 25 year loan). If you generate electricity then you can even sell it back to the National Grid for bonus payments via the Feed-in-Tariff. Alternatively, you can claim money for heat energy through the Renewable Heat Incentive.

Because Government grants and funding are controlled by different organisations and sources, it can often be confusing to work out just what Government grants you are eligible for. To make matters worse Government grant schemes often change with little warning. At Solar-Help we encourage you to use these pages to find out for yourself what is available. However, we also know the difficulty of working out how much it is going to cost for your individual property. After all, everyone’s home is different. This is why we strongly encourage you to contact us to get a free, no-obligation quote from a recognised company in your area.

What are Government grants and funding available for?

Housing improvements are often cheaper than you think, thanks to the vast range of Government grants and discounts available. Government grants and funding are available for:

Loft insulation grants - by insulating your roof you can save approximately 730kg of CO2 per year or around £145. Insulation grants are available from Local Authorities, energy companies, and suppliers. Depending on your circumstances you may receive 100% funding via a Government insulation grant. Even if you do not qualify for a full insulation grant you may still get 50% of your cost paid; so insulating the loft of a typical semi-detached house can cost from as little as £149!

Cavity Wall insulation grants - Cavity wall insulation can save you around £110 per year. Cavity Wall insulation grants are available from Local Authorities, energy companies, and suppliers. Depending on your circumstances you may receive 100% funding via an insulation grant. Even if you do not qualify for a full insulation grant you may still get 50% of your costs paid;  so cavity wall insulation for a typical semi-detached house can cost from as little as £129!

Central Heating grants – UK Heating grants will be available from the Warm Front Scheme in April, or alternatively, many energy companies offer discounts as a part of their commitments to reducing CO2. In the past there have been other Government grants to encourage you to replace your old central heating system or inefficient boiler – for example the Boiler Scrappage scheme. Although all the funding from the Government Boiler Scrappage scheme has now been allocated.

Solar Energy grants - With Government grants, you can save up to a third of our energy bills and receive money for the electricity you produce through solar panels, even if you use it yourself. Bonus tariffs are given for any energy fed into the National Grid (through the Feed-in-Tariff). Some solar panel installation companies also offer schemes called “rent-a-roof”, or free solar panel installation.
