Renewable Heat Incentive – Make money with Solar Heating Grants

The Renewable Heat Incentive is a solar heating grants scheme that pays you money based on how much renewable heat you generate. The Renewable Heat Incentive applies to homeowners and commercial property owners who install a renewable source of heat such as a solar heating system.

Although the Renewable Heat Incentive is not due to come into effect until 2012, installations of solar heating completed after 15th July will be eligible. Additionally, the Government have announced that there will be a Renewable Heat Incentive Premium Payments system. This will be a solar heating grants scheme which will provide one-off solar heating grants payments to homeowners to help cover the cost of initial installation. The Renewable Heat Incentive Premium solar heating grants will be available from July 2011 and homeowners who take advantage will then be eligible for the long-term Renewable Heat Incentive tariff payments that begin in 2012.

How does the Renewable Heat Incentive work?

The Renewable Heating Incentive will come into effect in two phases, the first of which will begin in July 2011.

Phase 1: Premium Payment Solar Heating Grants

Phase 1 of the Renewable Heat Incentive will be solar heating grants called Renewable Heat Incentive Premium payments . These Premium payment solar heating grants will be one-off lump sums available to homeowners to encourage them to install solar heating on their homes. The exact amounts available have yet to be confirmed, although the solar heating grants will definitely be available from July 2011. The proposed payments are likely to be around £300 per solar heating unit.

Applications are likely to open in May and, to be eligible, homeowners will need to be able to show that their home is well insulated (proof is by energy performance certificate) and be willing to give feedback on how their new solar unit performs.

Phase 2: Renewable Heat Incentive Tariffs

The Renewable Heat Incentive tariffs will act as a solar heating equivalent of the Feed-in Tariffs already available for solar PV systems. Anybody who has had a solar heating system installed after 15th 2009 by an MCS-accredited installer will be eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive tariff payments.

Details on the payments have yet to be confirmed, but they are due to begin alongside the Green Deal in October 2012.
